1. Review how mineral and bone metabolism adapts during pregnancy and lactation to meet the fetal and neonatal demands for minerals, and the impact that these changes normally have on the healthy maternal skeleton.
2. Appreciate what systematic reviews have revealed about the epidemiology, risk factors, and recurrence rates for skeletal fragility that presents for the first time during pregnancy and especially lactation.
3. Determine a reasonable evidence-based approach to diagnosing and treating skeletal fragility during pregnancy and lactation.
4. Understand the uncertainties about when and if pharmacological therapy may be indicated for this rare condition and if so, which treatments might be used.

Dr. Christopher Kovacs is University Research Professor, and Professor of Medicine (Endocrinology and Metabolism), Obstetrics & Gynecology, and BioMedical Sciences, at Memorial University of Newfoundland in Canada. He trained at Queen’s University, University of Alberta, Harvard Medical School, Massachusetts General Hospital, and University of Melbourne. His clinical practice focuses on osteoporosis, hyperthyroidism, and thyroid cancer, while his research focuses on bone metabolism during pregnancy, lactation, and fetal development. Among numerous awards, he has received the Gold Medal in Medicine from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and the Dr. Harvey Guyda Educator of the Year Award from the Canadian Society of Endocrinology and Metabolism. He has contributed over 150 research papers and 56 textbook chapters. He conceived and edited the multi-authored textbook, Maternal-Fetal and Neonatal Endocrinology: Physiology, Pathophysiology, and Clinical Management; a second edition appeared in 2025.
