ESI Clinical Case Workshop on Weight Loss Therapies and Their Potential Effects

ESI Clinical Case Workshop on Weight Loss Therapies and Their Potential Effects

Learning Objectives:

1. Recognize the impact of pharmacologically induced weight loss on body composition, with a focus on the potential risks of significant lean mass losses in vulnerable populations.

2. Develop understanding of current evidence regarding the skeletal consequences of intensive weight management on bone mineral density, bone microarchitecture, and fracture risk.

3. Apply practical, evidence-informed strategies to preserve muscle and bone during weight loss therapy, alongside approaches to identifying individuals who require closer musculoskeletal surveillance.

Professor

Deakin University

Dr. David Scott is a professor at the Institute for Physical Activity and Nutrition (IPAN), School of Exercise and Nutrition Sciences at Deakin University. His research is aimed at reducing the disease burden of sarcopenia, osteoporosis and obesity in older adults.

He has led several clinical trials exploring the effects of exercise and nutrition interventions, including weight loss, on improving body composition, physical function and bone health in older populations. He has a keen interest in objective assessments of physical activity and musculoskeletal imaging and the use of digital health tools to support healthy and independent aging.

Jakub Mesinovic, PhD

Research Fellow

Deakin University

Dr. Jakub Mesinovic is a research fellow at the Institute for Physical Activity and Nutrition (IPAN), School of Exercise and Nutrition Sciences at Deakin University. His research focuses on improving metabolic and musculoskeletal health in older adults with obesity.

He has led and contributed to clinical trials and meta-analyses examining the effects of exercise, energy restriction, and vitamin D supplementation on body composition, physical function, and bone health. He has a particular interest in musculoskeletal imaging - including DXA and HR-pQCT - and strategies to optimize weight loss while preserving muscle and bone mass in later life.
